| After listening to the CNN interview , I was very proud of His Majesty King Abdullah II. He is an eloquent, credible representative of the Arab world and I wish more of our Arab rulers shared his sentiments. Like his father before him, King Abdullah II rules a difficult people in a difficult part of the world. I say difficult people because I , as a Jordanian, know how resistant to change, how loyal to tribe and party our people can be and this resistance to change keeps us back. The fact that we have maintained relative stability in the midst of an explosive area is due to the courageous policies of our rulers and I pray that King Abdullah II continues to press on despite pressures from groups seeking their own power and self-interests.
King Abdullah talked at length about the need for a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian situation . I agree that the U.S. should do everything possible to promote fruitful discussions between the two parties but the burden of creating peace is between Israel and the Arab world. If there is ever to be peace and if we truly want peace, we Arabs must open our eyes and hearts and accept certain realities. #1 -Israelis want peace and stability but want to feel safe and have developed a "fortress mentality". Can't you understand their reluctance to negotiate.? With whom do they negotiate? Will all factions of Palestinians support and enforce a peace treaty with Israel or will there continue to be groups that vow the total destruction of Israel and continue to attack them? Making peace with a Palestine as it exists today , would be like making peace with a failed, anarchic , out of control state like Somalia or Yemen at one's border . How does one make peace with an entity that has no one government speaking for all the people and which vows destruction of its neighbor?
These are not realities we Arabs like to hear but this is reality. Israel is not going anywhere. We either make a practical peace with Israel or we condemn our people for centuries more misery, anger and instability.
